GOLDEN STŘÍBRO / THE TOWN OF STŘÍBRO

A rich programme for the entire family. Museums will be open and you can look forward to culinary experiences, music, dance, and a theatre performance on stilts.

Stříbro – a medieval mining town situated on the bank of the river Mže. Its name (meaning "silver" in Czech) refers to the mining of lead ore containing silver. The town boasts a Renaissance town hall, a Baroque plague column with statues of twelve Czech patrons by Lazar Widemann and a column with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Right on the square, a former Greyfriars monastery can be found which today houses the town museum offering a rich exhibition of national history and geography, with an emphasis on the history of mining, geology, and mineralogy. Beautifully landscaped terrace gardens are spread over the former town walls in the vicinity of the museum.
A remarkable view of the city can be enjoyed from the Gothic tower of the otherwise Baroque Church of All Saints; a climb up the 144 steps will reward you with a view of the historic centre as well as the broader surrounding area.
Near the town centre, in the valley of the river Mže, an open-air mining museum displaying mining equipment can be found. The museum offers a tour of the Prokop Royal Hereditary Mine Shaft, the only accessible mine in the Pilsen Region. Stations of the Cross leading to the Ronšperk hill are another point of interest in the surroundings of the town.

PROGRAMME
In the afternoon, all the museums in Stříbro will open their doors to visitors. The town museum at the former Greyfriars monastery will offer tours of selected sections of the exhibitions, with atmospheric music to add to the ambience. Children can look forward to a puppet fairy tale which starts at 5:00pm in the Paradise Garden. The square in Stříbro, where history meets contemporary architecture, will come to life with a varied cultural programme. The white domed tent of Bus Line 15 will be erected right in the centre of the square; around it, local restaurants and cafés will be offering pleasant seating areas and tastings of their cuisine to the accompaniment of music. As evening approaches, the cultural programme will be opened by actors on stilts, followed by an unconventional dance performance by Běla Dobiášová. After that, the audience will be surprised by a performance on stilts – a show of fine arts and acrobatics – a bird dressage performed by Divadlo Studna (The Well Theatre). The evening will conclude with an open-air film screening.
